7 SPRING SKIN CARE TIPS FOR HEALTHY, RADIANT SKIN

Written by GlyMed Advanced Aesthetic Institute | Mar 15, 2023 2:52:15 PM

Spring is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about spring skin care. Your skin has different needs in the spring than it does in the winter, and preparing ahead will keep your skin soft and luminous. So, swap out your products and change your skin care routine to gear up for warmer weather and more outdoor fun!

Here are seven tips to get you started:

1. REDUCE EXCESS OIL

According to dermatologist Blair Murphy-Rose, warm weather and higher humidity levels cause your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Using heavy moisturizers and creams can make your skin look and feel greasy in the springtime. Swap them out for lightweight moisturizers to reduce the amount of oil on your skin.

EXCELLENT LIGHTWEIGHT MOISTURIZERS FOR SPRING:

You can also switch your cleanser to a water-based option, but beware! Cleansers that strip your skin of natural oil can cause your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum to compensate, making your skin oilier.

Use a gentle cleanser that has less oil and doesn’t strip your skin of sebum, such as our Aesthetician's Choice Award winner: Foaming Cleanser

FIGHTING ACNE

If you are acne-prone, excess oil can cause you to have breakouts. Fortunately, you can reduce oil production using the right skin care.

Dermatologist Melanie Palm recommended in a 2018 Forbes article to use products with salicylic acid for oil control. She also recommended glycolic acid peels because they "brighten skin tone, build collagen, and have mild acne-fighting capabilities. Plus, it's even safe in pregnancy," Palm said.

GlyMed’s three Skin Astringent products harness the power of salicylic acid to control oil production and clear acne breakouts. Use them with Mattifying Sulfur Masque for even better results!

2. CONTINUE TO MOISTURIZE

Having oilier skin doesn’t mean your moisturizer can have a spring break. Quite the opposite. Warm weather and common outdoor spring activities cause you to sweat more. When you sweat, all that moisture goes to the skin’s surface and leaves the inner layers like a dry lake. Moisturizer helps keep water in those inner layers so your skin stays soft and smooth.

Your skin also needs moisturizer after taking a shower or washing your hands because the hot water strips your body of natural oil. Replenish your skin with Hydrating Hand & Body Lotion. Its tropical butters and natural nutrients will leave you feeling soft and radiant all over.

3. WASH YOUR FACE REGULARLY

It is always good skin care practice to wash your face in the morning and at night, but in the spring, you may also need to wash your face midday.

Sweating opens your pores and flushes out oil, bacteria and toxins, which rest on the surface of your skin. As you cool off, your pores close up. If you still have oil, bacteria and toxins on your face, they can clog your pores and cause you to break out into pimples and zits.

Being outside also exposes your skin to dirt, pollution and other impurities, so sweating in the great outdoors definitely calls for a good cleanse.

As you get back into your favorite outdoor activities, whether that be biking riding in the mountains or sun tanning on the beach, be sure to wash your face afterward. Use cleansers like Mega Cream Cleanser and Vitamin C Cleanser to remove all that dirt and bacteria so your skin stays clear and smooth.

4. EXFOLIATE FOR GLOWING SKIN

Winter weather can leave your skin dry and dull, so spring is the perfect time to revive it using a quality exfoliator.

Exfoliation breathes life back into your skin by removing dead cells and boosting cell regeneration. It also stimulates blood flow, giving you a plump, rosy complexion.

EXFOLIATORS YOU’LL WANT TO TRY:
  • Peptide Micro Scrub—Safer than microdermabrasion; use on all parts of the body for smooth, polished skin.
  • Age Defying Masque—A gentle yet effective peel that mimics the skin’s natural exfoliation process.

In spring, your skin will shed more dead cells as it adapts to warmer weather and fights off allergens. To keep it smooth, exfoliate 1 – 2 times a week. Exfoliating more often is unnecessary and can damage your skin, so stick to your weekly routine.

Your skin also needs more spring cleaning as you spend more time outside where dirt and pollutants can clog your pores. Our GlyMed Pros use chemical peels with natural lactic acid to dissolve impurities inside your skin. Reach out to one of our aestheticians to schedule a peel treatment.

Keeping your skin clean will prevent premature aging and leave your skin glowing all spring long!

5. PREVENT AND TREAT ALLERGIC REACTIONS

While spring blossoms are beautiful to look at, their pollen can cause major allergic reactions.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you may have noticed your skin becomes dry and itchy during the spring. Board-certified dermatologist Marie Hayag explained in a 2020 Coveteur article that allergies trigger an immune response that releases histamine into your bloodstream. Histamine increases blood flow, which causes inflammation and makes your skin more sensitive and susceptible to hives, scaly patches, redness and other signs of irritation.

Hayag said, “These skin reactions may be painful and itchy, causing you to scratch and damage your skin, which can lead to scarring or prolonged skin sensitivity.”

According to dermatologist Tamara Lazic Strugar, 80 percent of people with allergies experience some type of skin reaction.

“These reactions alter your skin barrier function. If your skin has a poor barrier function, allergens and irritants are able to penetrate more easily,” Lazic told Vogue in 2020.

To protect your skin barrier, Lazic recommends using products “free of ingredients that could potentially cause irritation or an allergic reaction such as fragrance, parabens, certain preservatives, and drying alcohol.”

This is where GlyMed Plus comes in. Because we’re a professional skin care line, we only use pharmaceutical-grade ingredients with zero artificial fragrances or fillers. You can feel safe using our products during allergy season to keep your skin healthy.

OTHER WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN DURING ALLERGY SEASON:

TAKE ALLERGY MEDICATION WHEN NEEDED

If allergies start to make your nose run and your eyes itch, you will touch your face more often, transferring dirt, bacteria and other pore-clogging agents to your skin. Talk to a doctor about how to manage your allergies, so you not only feel better but keep your skin safe too.

DECREASE INFLAMMATION

Prevent your skin from having an allergic reaction by fighting inflammation with glycolic acid. This natural ingredient reduces inflammation to keep out bacteria and pathogens.

6. PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN

You saw this one coming, didn’t you?

In spring, your skin is exposed to more UV radiation because the sun is at a more direct angle to the Earth, according to the FDA.

UV rays are the biggest contributors to aging skin, according to WebMD. If you go outside without sun protection factor (SPF), your skin will age faster! You also risk developing skin cancer.

Even if you’re not an outdoorsy person, just short amounts of time outside without SPF can create dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles. And, you deserve better than that!

Protect your skin by applying sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside. Carry a bottle of sunscreen with you or have one in your car so you can reapply it every two hours.

Since the sun emits more UV radiation in the spring, use SPF 30 or stronger. Hydrating Protection Gel SPF 30 protects your skin from the sun and premature aging with natural antioxidants.

Looking for an anti-aging moisturizer with SPF? Moisturizing Protection Cream SPF 30 keeps your skin hydrated and protected as you enjoy the spring weather.

7. USE THE BEST SERUMS FOR SPRINGTIME

Serums are powerful products and a must for every skin care routine! The question is which serums are the best for spring skin care.

Dermatologist Melanie Palm told Forbes in 2018 she recommends using an antioxidant-rich serum in the spring and summer because it “helps thwart the assault of UV, infrared, visible light, heat, and even environmental factors that can lead to detrimental free radical production within skin cells."

Protective Skin Serum baths your skin in antioxidants as well as ceramides, humectants and other age-fighting nutrients to protect your skin cells from environmental damage.

Restoring Fulvic Elixir contains one of the most powerful antioxidants—fulvic acid. It can protect your skin from almost any harmful element you may encounter this spring with its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Other Excellent Serums for Spring Skin Care:
  • Peptide Serum—Gives added protection against UV rays and blue light by activating the skin’s self-defense system.
  • Vitamin C Serum—Neutralizes free radicals and lightens pigments, such as sun spots; can also reduce inflammation caused by allergens.
  • Bio-Renewal Serum—Delivers the same skin-rejuvenating benefits as retinol without increasing photosensitivity; perfect for spending time outdoors.
